Taylorsville
My mom asked me look at a house she wanted to buy at the end of 2022, it needed a great deal of work and I agreed to help her fix it up. The house is in the town of Taylorsville, population 150, and at an elevation of 5,000 feet.
The house was built in the early 1900's and moved from a mining town in the 1930's. It had old single pane windows and multiple layers of wallpaper. Unfortunately much of the foundation and floor joists were beyond repair
There was not crawlspace under the house which meant that most of the flooring and subflooring had to be removed
Luckily many of the girders were sound, but all the mudsill and most of the floor joists had to be replaced
In some places there was little left to work with
I had not spent much time in the mountains where snow is a part of life, it was a heavy snow year and an adjustment for me
While the floors were torn out, we upgraded the electrical panel and ran all new wires throughout the house. I did the electrical plan and hired an electrician to do the panel upgrade and some of the wiring, but did most of the work myself
I replaced most of the windows, raising them up about a foot
I trimmed the windows on the inside with cherry trim with painted sills
I trenched the entire property, added 8 hose bibs and a six zone sprinkler system
I created an small arched passthrough from the lioving room to kitchen and a larger arch into the living room
I tore out the floor and walls in the bathroom, moved the sink, and put in all new plumbing and electrical
One unique feature in the bathroom is that I installed a combination washer/dryer that is accessed from inside the bathroom
The latest project was installing a new window, running electrical and then insulating the kitchen and dining room walls, hanging sheetrock, then taping and texturing the wall. I did a hand troweled "imperfect smooth" texture on the wall and ceiling
The next projects on the house are to put in new oak floors and cherry baseboard, tear out and rebuild the entryway, and put in new kitchen cabinets...
